A commitment to Service Learning...

Good Morning Teachers!- Seen in the Photo are teachers preparing the materials
in a typical Saturday morning class. Expenses for teaching materials are provided
by the student teachers.

C.H.E.E.R.S. stand for Childhood Early Enrichment Reinforcement School. It was the brainchild of the 1997 officers of the CDE (Child Development and Education) in collaboration with the department’s former chairperson, Ms. Jamelia "Mely Villanueva who now heads GURO (Growth Upgrading and Resource Office), a non-stock, non-profit organization committed to continuing teacher's training and excellence within the Miriam College faculty as well as external groups and individuals.

Before a Learning Time...

C.H.E.E.R.S. was originally a Saturday play day activity for the neighboring impoverished children of Baranggay Loyola Heights. Due to its successful attendance rate, it was developed into a preparatory school program. The Saturday classes are participated by children ages 4 to 6 years old coming as far as Balara in U.P. Classes are held in Baranggay Loyola Height's Chamberlette Yakap Day Care Center building, a one floor space originally constructed for town meetings or talks.

Volunteerism is integrated with basic teacher’s training program as CDE students hone their teaching skills with the challenge to make it original and extra creative. Like in theater, student teachers are tasked to put up a creative learning show. Armed with storybooks, crayons, puppets, and cassette tapes, learning for Pre-schoolers has never been this fun, entertaining and interactive.

What made CHEERS unique from any of the public pre-school program held in the Loyola area is its skillful employment of the 4-PRONGS Approach.

The 4-PRONGS is a creative reading program known for its high touch possibility and high interactivity where values education remain at its core. It was developed in the 80s by a UP Education Professor.

This multi-interdisciplinary reading program is commonly used in private institutions such as the UP integrated, Ateneo de Manila University and Miriam Child Study Center. The program was spearheaded by C.H.E.E.R.S. current Academic Coordinator, Ms. Isabelle "Isa" Saplala last June 2007.

To date, CHEERS boast of its many successful graduates. Many of which had continued their education in both distinguished public and private institutions.
